Take Spaces and Make Them New, La Pedrera

Sunny autumn days in Uruguay. During a two week residency run by Curatoria Forense. I got to know the small beachside town of La Pedrera. The crashing waves and sand dunes made a stunning back drop, but what interested me more was the deserted ghostly feeling of the town. There are only 150 permanent residents, however during the summer the town swells to 20, 000 holiday makers mainly from Uruguay, Argentina and Brazil.

I found an empty kiosk used during February’s carnival to dispense drinks and chose it to make the latest installation for the work Take Spaces and Make Them New.

The newspaper filled the space hanging by threads. As the wind blew in through the broken glass the forms knotted and became something new.

Residencia de arte contemporáneo en La Pedrera

Esta residencia es iniciativa del grupo Curatoría Forense, quienes vienen llevando esta experiencia adelante desde enero de 2010 en diferentes países de Latinoamérica. Hoy jueves es la presentación de los 24 artistas y el sábado será la fiesta de bienvenida con música, baile y recreación para adultos

Según cuentan los organizadores “cada edición se organiza en función de una temática particular, en este caso: “EL DESEO DE OTRO: gestiones autónomas de arte contemporáneo”. Además, buscan crear lazos directos con la comunidad de forma de contribuir a la formación de nuevos y actuales gestores culturales locales, como también a la creación de relaciones afectivas y efectivas orientadas a la construcción de redes de trabajo entre regiones y el intercambio horizontal de conocimientos y saberes”.

Esta residencia tiene como eje central de desarrollo reflexionar y debatir sobre las prácticas de gestión autónoma de arte contemporáneo en un contexto social y cultural que ha desarrollado estrategias de auto-sustentabilidad y establecimiento efectivo de redes comunitarias.

La residencia está coordinada y producida por: Jorge Sepúlveda T. (Curador Independiente), Ilze Petroni (Investigadora de Arte Contemporáneo) y Sofía Dabarca (Licenciada en Artes Plásticas y Visuales).

Artist talks and Make Spaces New Uruguay Schools

I spent Monday the 13th at two schools in El Pinar, Uruguay with local English teacher, musician and Couch Surfer Claudia. She invited me to talk to three groups of children about my home, life and 34South|61North in English and then to answer questions. I happily agreed and prepared information and a photo show.

The first group were teenagers who attend  UTU Atlántida Formación básica profesional en deporte school, a technical system offered as an alternative to high school for Uruguayan teenagers. I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to hold the attention of the class for about quarter of an hour and then they asked me some questions about my work in English and wanted to take a photo!

The afternoon saw us move onto Escuela Pública 162 primary school. I was leading Two Year Three classes with Claudia. I gave the same presentation to begin, modified for younger children. I went onto ask them if they would like to make an installation with me. They were keen! So two times over I explaied how to cut and stick re-cycled paper to Take Spaces and Make Them New. These works were quick made with sixty children participating in total. I was amazed that the kids needed to be encouraged to make big shapes and not to be too careful. Even at at a young age children have learnt to be cautious and to perfect things. I hoped to introduce the idea of experimenting and being quick and drawing freely. I hope that this activity will have introduced ideas of experimentation, observation of the environment and the concept of re-using and re-cycling materials.

West Kent College, Reino Unido. BTEC – Interesada en color, formas y la mezcla entre pintura y trabajos en 3D.

2005-2008
Universidad de Kingston, Reino Unido. Título en Bellas Artes. –Continué trabajando predominantemente como colorista en técnicas tradicionales. Creció mi interés en estudiar como la cultura de una persona afecta la percepción que tiene de otras, y de cómo esta misma cultura afecta la manera en que esta persona vive su vida e interactúa en sociedad. Empecé a pensar en que manera podría alterar entornos en mi obra para así hacerlos parecer nuevos. La meta fue el hacer a las personas apreciar lo que tienen a su alrededor; sus entornos y culturas y hacerlos ver nuevos. En otras palabras, cuestionar lo que ellos asumen como normal o mundano.

Puntos Importantes durante la Universidad
2007
-Trabaje como curadora en mi primer show junto a Sara Hibbert e Imogen Canning en un local eventual (pop-up) “The Old Ship” un bar fuera de uso en Shadwell, Londres. Encargada de conseguir el local y rentarlo por una semana, selección de artistas y curación del show. Organización del servicio de comida y bebidas y entretenimiento para la fiesta de inauguración. Diseño y distribución de volantes para la promoción del evento.
-Formé parte del programa de intercambio estudiantil europeo “Erasmus” en Pontevedra, España. Este culminó con una muestra colectiva de estudiantes del programa.
-Durante este tiempo fui a Arco, en Madrid. Allí asistí a clases con estudiantes españoles y artistas Coreanos. Empecé a interesarme en la cultura y el arte contemporáneo de Corea.
-Visité Corea del Sur luego de obtener la beca de viaje Stanley Picker. Allí investigué acerca de la cultura Coreana y como la globalización está afectando el arte contemporáneo de Corea.
-Evento Inn on the Green. Encargada de organizar la locación y promoción de una exhibición de trabajos de dos artistas en Portobello, Notting Hill, Londres. Este espacio es gratis para mostrar obras siempre y cuando los artistas vivan en el municipio. Este espacio fue cerrado en 2011 debido a cortes presupuestarios.

2008
Comité de patrocinio del tercer año. Jugué un papel clave en recolectar fondos y obtener patrocinio para la exhibición de graduación. Esto incluyó organización de fiestas, reuniones con empresas locales y contactos con empresas nacionales para obtener patrocinio.

Post Universidad 2008-2010
Años de viajes, predominantemente en Asia. Culminando con un año viviendo en Japón.
Allí desarrollé un conocimiento cultural y entendí mas acerca de las culturas asiáticas.
Organicé y le di promoción a The Old Nishidai Route una fiesta de arte en Shimokitazawa. El evento contó con obras de viajes por Asia y Tokio. El local se llenó en la noche de la inauguración. Un bar con exhibiciones mensuales. Libre de comisión.

2010-2013
Trabajando como artista en Londres. Durante estos años he continuado mi exploración de los temas de la cultura, la existencia física y su alteración.

2010
Pasante administrativa en HIVE, Londres. Galería y estudio sin fines de lucro. La idea consistía en ofrecer estudios y espacios a artistas y empresas creativas de Londres a muy bajo precio. Esto se logró al alquilar un edificio que estaba destinado a ser demolido en el transcurso de un año. Allí trabajé llevando las cuentas de alquileres, listas de correos así como montando exhibiciones, vigilando los eventos, enmarcando cuadros. El espacio cerró a principios del 2011 al ser demolido el edificio. HIVE no se reubicó.

2011
Organicé y curé una exhibición de tres artistas llamado Between Earth and Air en The Tabernacle, Londres. The Tabernacle es también un centro comunitario que apoya las artes en la zona.

Trabajé promocionando la tienda eventual (pop-up) de navidad para Today’s Specials, Una organización de jóvenes diseñadores británicos dirigida por Julia Gerogallis y Richard Brendon.

Nour, RR Gallery, Notting Hill, Londres. Encargada de montar y supervisar la exhibición en esta galería gerenciada de manera independiente por Rebeca Dean.
El período entre finales del 2012 y comienzos del 2013 fue de mucho trabajo para mi como artista. Exhibí mis trabajos en varios eventos colectivos y un show individual. Mientras esto sucedía estaba preparando lo que sería el comienzo de 34South|61North. Esto requería el contactar artistas locales, organizar lugares de estadía y residencias.

Estoy interesada en estas charlas ya que una de mis metas es aprender acerca de la gestión de las artes tanto en el ámbito de las Américas como de manera global.

Montevideo-Artists and Galleries

Court Yard of Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo, a converted prison in central Montevideo.

Tuesday the 7th of May, new day, new country.
Uruguay.
I got off the boat at Colonia and onto the bus and arrived in Montevideo to be met by Lindsey an outgoing and kind person who is studying Japanese and Korean in the University as part of her major. After settling into her house I let her get back to studying and began to look around the city.

Montevideo, like all the South American cities I have visited so far, is full of street art and graffiti. The diversity and colour of the works make the streets, that could otherwise have seemed a bit drab come to life.

I  took time to visit a range of museums, including the pre-Colonial art museum and decorative arts museum. However, two spaces stood out and these were SUBTE and Espacio de Arte Contemporáneo. SUBTE is a subterranean gallery in the space that was intended to be the entrance and ticket hall to Montevideo’s first Subway station. Construction was halted shortly after this initial hall was finished as architects realised that the ground was made up of rocks which are very hard, so progress would be extremely slow and costly. The station is now predominantly used for installations and proves to be a space that shows some of the countries less conventional pieces. EAC is in the old womans prison in the university district of the capital and uses the ex-cells as salons to host individual artists works. The space is managed by the government and changes the exhiits every two months. You are also invited to look around the grounds. The building alone is worth a visit. The current show, T10, until the end of May, is well presented and incorporates an interesting mix of works. Nearly all the museums in Uruguay are free. If you do have to pay its around $20, which is about US$1.

Montevideo was completed with a couple of studio space visits starting with artist and manager of contemporary space MARTE, Gustavo Batares (Located at: Colón 1468, Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo).  He is an easy to talk to sort of person who happily showed me about the space and explained its history of commercial gallery turned studio come show space. He is now preparing to open a show on the 18th of this month with Rally Arts.

After this I went to visit Eduardo Cardozo in his studio. Its actually more of a house than a studio. He has three rooms with very high sealings, as is common for buildings in Uruguay, a kitchen and a bathroom. We discussed his work career and life over some Mates, I wanted to start painting there and then! But, just before I expresses my desire to sabotage a canvas friends started arriving and Friday night band practice began.

I left the band to find Claudia, who I was going to stay with in the country side, at a protest over the exploitation of Uruguay’s natural resources…
