Driving in Caracas

I spent May and part of June in Venezuela. The original idea was to go in February and cross over land from Colombia at the San Cristobal border. As protests and violence escalated this was no longer a viable option.

Instead I waited in Colombia and traveled to Venezuela six weeks later crossing at the northern border of Paraguaichón. The bus continued through the country, for twelve hours, terminating in Caracas.

Below is a series of photos that illustrate a drive I took through the city. Life in Venezuela continues despite the many problems that its people face.

Portugese/Español/English
O projeto perfil é SOBRE PESSOAS E PARA PESSOAS.

The project profile is ABOUT PEOPLE TO THE PEOPLE.
In a period where companies have more say than regular people, where machines make more than hands, Perfil Project looks for the humanisation of life. It explores if that humans could be concomitant of the same race.
We’re searching for people with stories and/or unique skills e.g. artists, chefs, storyteller, gardeners, tailors,
carpenters, housewives, builders, musicians, entrepreneurs and people who can transmit the beauty of being a regular person, different or no.
Going against the celebration and worship of spectacle culture, the project will create mini profiles of interesting individuals that can instruct, inspire and open up new horizons with their particular skills, for all the culture, creativity and love that’s around.

In December I went to visit La Karakola cultural centre in Quito. I wanted to see how they ran the space and was hoping to include them in the work ‘The Map Exchange’.

During the meeting we were discussing our personal works as artists and I learnt that they were organising a performance event in the second week of January in a national park close to Quito, called Jerusalem. I decided to stay on in Ecuador so that I could join the group of artists for the event.

For three days and two nights we lived together discussing our work and developing the ideas with which we had arrived.

The work I made was in theory close to the work I had been making just before leaving London as part of the ‘Take Spaces and Make Them New’ series. During the weekend I began to install work live again, blurring the boundaries between installation and performance. I also found that I was continuing my concept by working with natural materials from the park just as in urban areas I work with wast materials from the urbanity.

Big thanks to Zona 30, The Wick and everyone who helped on both ends. Next step is to live stream the performances so that everyone who has been part of and who have been following our work throughout the past 8 months can be there with us as we comment on the mundane and amazing moments that make us human.

Plastic Art Workshop-Sustainable Bolivia

Friday the 20th of September was the first Sustainable Bolivia open day. We organised the event to introduce volunteers with local residents and partner organisations in the SB network.

The general vibe was great with demonstrations, stalls, art, craft, a fund raising raffle and of course, amazing home made Soap de Mani!

With Henry giving information about his foundation Fundacion Adelante Bolivia.

During the workshop I explained why by working with waste materials and cheap locally found items I hope to make art an accessible outlet for anybody who has a creative idea.

I explained how I have been making the Bloom forms and the woven pieces and then let the collaborators work however they choose.

34South|61North, Bolivia has had a focus on plastic waste and installation. Here I got back to some old style paper collage with striking natural forms and bold colours. New mural for the best bar in town.

Bloom-Take Spaces and Make Them New-mARTadero, Cochabamba.

After arriving in Cochabamba I visited the mARTadero, a contemporary arts, theatre and music venue in Cochabamba, which occupies an old slaughter house. Situated in a neighbourhood south of the main plaza and full of mechanics shops, the mARTadero strives to bring this neglected community into the arts.

As I approached the centre I was struck by a solemn Kiosk structure that sits in the plaza in front of the mARTadero. The neglected emptiness of the space was grasping. This was the site for Take Spaces and Make Them New.  After several meetings I was invited to participate in Enred Arte con Nada, 2013.

Bloom-Take Spaces and Make Then New is the first work in the series to use plastic instead of paper. I worked with plastic because the streets of Cochabamba are full of plastic waste and there is little effort to preserve materials. I made the bloom shapes with the bags allowing them to float and fill the empty spaces of the kiosk.

The work filled and transformed the Kiosk. Gaia-Pacha, a local organisation which is running a campaign to promote using cotton shopping bags and re-using waste, plastic provided supplementary information on plastic and general waste disposal in Cochabamba.

After five days we de-installed Bloom.

Camilla Brendon, 34South|61North film by Lara Jacoski and Patrick Belem

The month of June was spent in Brazil. I traveled from Porto Alegre to Caceres near the boarder with Bolivia. I stopped and worked in Porto Alegre, Curitiba, Sao Paulo and Rio.

In Curitiba Lara Jacoski and Patrick Belem captured the works I did as part of 34South|61North and combined them with an interview about my practice to make this Video.
